About the Kindred Spirit Series ~ These mugs hold a special place in my heart. During the summer of 2024, I was moved to create unique mugs that captured the essence of animals, beginning with some odd run-ins; watching in awe as an osprey dove for a fish in the lake that’s become my happy place by my home, a family of bobcats moving in to the bushes behind my workplace, and a bear being sighted in a tree on my block. I’ve always believed that particular animals can show up to bring messages, and this inspired me to capture their energy through my craft as a means to share with others so they could find their own meanings. I have already been dearly moved by the experiences and connections that patrons have already shared with me, and if you have a reason for purchasing this specific piece I would be honored to hear what your connection is!
About the process ~ I use a process called “sgraffito” to make these pieces. It comes from the Italian word “graffiare”, which means “to scratch”. In the context of pottery, I paint a layer of colored slip (or really runny clay) over the base of the mug, and once it dries I “scratch” or carve away that slip layer to create images and patterns. All of my sgraffito pieces are hand carved without stencils which makes each a unique, one-of-a-kind work.
A regular sized coffee mug that holds ~12oz. made from stoneware porcelain clay.
Dishwasher, microwave and oven safe. Handmade in Longmont, Colorado with mud and love.
